Working in Ibiza

Ibizas workers are a cosmopolitan bunch united in their cause to enjoy a summer of fun in the sun. Only by bagging a good job can you enjoy and fund the Ibiza lifestyle so sought after by global fox trotters. Although the cost of living is lower than the UK and the general standard of living is much higher, it’s easy to spend money enjoying the finer things in life.

Be prepared to work hard; 5 months dancing or working the bar is heavy going even for the headstrong. Even a supposed day job can take its toll with long hours and late night shop openings. But the rewards of living in Ibiza are worth the effort; glorious days off at the beach, shopping in Dalt Vila’s cobbled streets and the occasional night on Ibiza’s tiles mixing with the world’s coolest individuals.

After the extravagant opening parties in May and June, the island tempo and temperature hots up slowly but surely, ready for the peak season hordes. In August it’s so packed with visitors that queuing is de rigueur – for taxis, toilets, clubs, car parks and even Ibiza Town itself. The siesta comes giving you those few hours to put your feet up or hit the beach and top up that tan. As the days get hotter and longer the secret is not to burn the candle at both ends if you're to make it to September; Ibiza’s finest month populated by cool people returning for the closings. Remember you have all season - everything in moderation - so pace yourselves; your job and sanity depend on it.

Rest assured, as a worker in Spain you are protected by strict rights which are upheld in minute detail within your contract.

Bear in mind that Spanish wages may be slightly lower than the UK, but there’s an opportunity to earn good tips in Ibiza. Waitressing the VIPs and waiting tables in bars or restaurants can generate good tips from Ibiza’s many movers and groovers. Remember Ibiza Job Centre does not take a commission from your wages like many agencies so you get to enjoy all your hard earned euros.

A ‘NIE’ number (Numero de Identification de Extranjero) is your Foreign Identification Number. It’s a necessity in all fiscal and legal matters in Spain, especially if you intend to live here all year round. It enables you as a worker to claim a national social security health plan and other long term benefits. It’s important you apply for this once you have your contract.

Social security contributions are compulsory for all foreign workers in Spain, whether employed or self employed. By paying the system provides you with a range of medical and financial coverage with the same level of protection as a Spanish National. You pay around 6.4% of the monthly wage and the state contribute around 20% work hard and enjoy it, Ibiza’s magic is there to be savoured.
